Roadkill season
after the petals from the crabapple trees have fallen and
formed a brown crust against the curb
(like the snow a few months ago,
black from exhaust)
and before the pools open:
raccoons and squirrels litter the streets,
viscera spilled onto the asphalt, pink
and red
and grey.
on the way back from Connecticut i saw a cat,
not disemboweled but
stiff and wide-eyed
legs pointing toward the sky.
